October 2007 -- Climbing Out of Depression

National Depression Screening Day - October 11, 2007

Everyone has, at some time, experienced the blues or feelings of sadness. Although crises affect people differently, losses such as divorce or the end of a long-term relationship, the death of a loved one, the loss of a job or severe criticism can trigger feelings of grief. While feeling blue or sad is natural and usually passes with time, some people have more severe depression that could be caused by:

  • a chemical imbalance.
  • food allergies
  • a viral illness.
  • a tumor or cancer.
  • a head injury.
  • surgery.
  • childbirth.
  • alcoholism.
  • prescription drugs.
  • chronic pain.
  • stress.

Antidotes for the Blues

  • Eat nutritious meals and snacks.
  • Avoid overeating and alcohol or drug use to comfort yourself.
  • Get enough sleep. Seek out healthy drug-free remedies, such as relaxation techniques, if you suffer from insomnia.
  • Exercise vigorously at least three times a week for at least 30 minutes each time.
  • Talk to people-whether it be friends, relatives, clergy, or a local crisis line.
  • Think of things to do that have made you feel good in the past. Go to a movie, go shopping, listen to a favorite recording, play cards or a sport, or take a brief vacation.

Coping With Severe Depression

If you can't shake the blues, see your doctor for an examination to rule out an underlying medical problem. Ask your doctor, Employee Assistance Program coordinator, a social service agency or a community or private mental health center for a referral to a mental health professional. If you or someone you know is contemplating suicide, call you community health center crisis line or suicide prevention service. Warm, supportive people will talk to you about your problem and help you see things in a better light. Regardless of the type of depression and its cause, relief can almost always be found. Seeking hlep is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage - and the wisdom - to help yourself.
