CHILDREN'S LITURGY OF THE WORD

Children's Liturgy of the Word is part of the Eucharistic Liturgy which follows the norms established by the Directory for Masses with Children (1973).

During the proclaiming of Sacred Scripture and homily, (Liturgy of the Word), five to twelve year old children, who wish to participate, are led to a place where they receive the Word of God. We are a large parish, with many families in need of a weekly Children's Liturgy of the Word. Saturday night / Sunday Mass is the most important form of religious instruction/catechesis for all of us, as well as our praise and worship to God. In the Mass, through Word and Sacrament, we are taught and challenged by the Paschal Mystery - Christ's Passion, Death and Resurrection - made present. Our children at Mass learn to love every baptized member present, including our babies, disabled and elderly, -- so that their Catholic faith does not lose its purpose, meaning or soul. Let us help our young children develop a love for Mass, a love for the Eucharist and Sacred Scripture, as well as a love for all God's people.

All are welcome to come and all are asked to participate. You do not need to have a five to twelve year old child. Though there are no specific age requirements, volunteers should have a strong love for children, the ability not just to read, but proclaim the Word of God, and the necessary training. This is not babysitting, but a full and true participation into the Source and Summit of our faith - the Eucharistic Liturgy, the Mass.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION - PRE-KINDERGARTEN THROUGH SIXTH GRADE

Parents are the primary educators for their children's faith. Our classes, sacramental preparation and community-building fellowships and parent sessions are designed to aid parents in that awesome responsibility.

Our Goals Are:

• To lead our young children to deep understanding of their Catholic faith, and   conversion of their hearts and minds to Christ and His Church.
• To teach, or catechize our children about what God and the Church asks of them.
• To reach out to parents and assist in your role as primary educator of the faith

Our pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes are open to all four and five year olds of the parish who are four years of age by September 1, of the current or upcoming school year. The classes are 8:45 and 10:15 on Sunday mornings, designed so that families attend Mass together, with class following. The current curriculum we use for our four year olds is the I Am Special series by Our Sunday Visitor. We are also using the Christ Jesus, The Way series for our five year olds.

Class for grades 1-6 also are offered Sunday mornings at 8:45 and 10:15, but also on Sundays at 6:45 P.M. (grades 5 & 6), Mondays at 4:30 and 6:30, and in the summer during the last week of July/first week of August known as our two-week Summer Session.

Preparation for reception of First Holy Communion here in the diocese of Harrisburg begins in 1st grade and culminates with our 2nd grade candidates receiving our Lord. This is a two-year process including parent meetings, retreats, and the reception of First Penance.

In 3rd grade, students are catechized on the Church's identity, the four marks of the Church and a deeper understanding of prayer, service, faith and God's Trinitarian nature. 4th grade students are immersed into a catechesis of morality through study of the beatitudes and commandments. 5th grade students are confronted with a deeper understanding of the person of Christ, the Church and the 7 Sacraments. 6th grade is a biblical catechesis on morality, salvation history and Christ as the fulfillments of all prophesy. Currently we are using the "This is Our Faith" series for grades 1-6, which will be up for review after the 2005-2006 year.

All of our curriculums implement the catechetical norms and regulations of the Diocese of Harrisburg. Our young brothers and sisters in each grade are blessed to have a process rooted in the four pillars of Catholic faith: The Creed, Sacraments, Life in Christ and Prayer. This catechesis is made possible first by the hard work of parents, and then the dedication of many volunteers who offer to our parish their faith, time and talents. Parent participation is welcomed and encouraged in many different ways. Please contact the Director of Religious Education to find out how you can help bring Christ and His Church to the lives of children.
