The
parish of St. John Neumann in Manheim Township was begun on Sunday,
June 19, 1972, on the same day that in Rome, Bishop John Neumann was
canonized a saint. On December 16, 1978, Mr. Joseph Brown, the Planning
Chairman, presented the keys of the new church to Monsignor William
H. Keeler, who blessed and dedicated the new church. Bishop Daley
was sick and could not attend.
Father John Acri was named the first pastor and led the new parish
until May of 1980. Father Patrick Devine was appointed the second
pastor and led the infant parish to its maturity until June, 1994,
when Monsignor Richard A. Youtz became the third pastor.
In 1982, Bishop Keeler dedicated the rectory. A new additional
to the original church building was dedicated by Bishop Nicholas
Dattilo on October 7, 1990.
During these years, the parish became involved in many ecumenical
undertakings, and on April 1, 1990, signed a covenant with St. Peter's
Lutheran Church. The parish has continued to grow in faith and in
its service to its people and community. Statues of the Blessed
Virgin and St. John Neumann, created by the sculptor Jay Hall of
the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., were blessed by Father
Devine on October 10, 1993. A library dedicated for the use of the
parish family was blessed on April 2, 1995. In twenty-five years,
the parish has more than doubled in size to over 2,400 families.
The parish is blessed with the presence of the Dominican Monastery
of the Lititz Pike. We also have three religious vocations. Dominican
Sister Margaret O'Neill of Adrian, Michigan, daughter of Robert
and Kitty O'Neill, took her final vows on June 1, 1996. Reverend
Michael Letter, son of Charles and Margaret Letter, Jr., was ordained
for the Diocese of Harrisburg on May 18, 1996. Mercy Sister Joan
Henkel of Dallas, Pennsylvania, daughter of Loretta Henkel and the
late Donald Henkel, took her final vows in August, 1996.
