Award Winning Journalist and Author to Speak at Resurrection Catholic School

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

On February 29th Resurrection Catholic School will present award winning Philadelphia journalist Susan FitzGerald. FitzGerald will talk about her new parenting book, Letting Go with Love and Confidence: Raising Responsible, Resilient Self-sufficient Teens in the 21st Century (Avery 2011). Co-authored with Kenneth Ginsburg M.D., an adolescent medicine specialist at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the book is filled with practical and thoughtful advise on the many “how” and “when” questions that can drive parents crazy. FitzGerald interviewed parents from throughout the country for the book and their collective wisdom on raising adolescents will help you turn a time of potential strife into an opportunity for positive growth. FitzGerald will share the “three’step litmus test” that can be applied to any decision (Is it safe? Is it practical? Does it meet my standards for decency and morality?) and will show you how to use the “check-in rule” and “code word” to help your adolescent stay safe. As one of the book reviewers said: “Letting Go with Love and Confidence is likely to become your teen years’ bible.”

FitzGerald will speak on Wednesday, February 29th at 6:30 p.m. in the school gym. Resurrection Catholic School is located at 521 East Orange Street. The event is free and open to the community. Refreshments will be served.

For more information call the school at 392-3083.

Department of Public Welfare Funding

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

On November 12, 2011, the PA DPW (Department of Public Welfare) cut funding by more than $100,000,000 for services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Many of our family members and friends face the very real possibility of losing the supports and services they so desperately need.

Below is a proposed letter to Governor Corbett on this very serious problem. Please take a moment to read the letter. If you agree with the content, please sign and mail it to the Governor or feel free to draft your own letter. Regardless of which letter you send, please cc your local Representative and Senator.

The Honorable Tom Corbett
225 Main Capitol Building
Harrisburg, PA 17120

Dear Governor Corbett:

Effective November 15, 2011, the PA Department of Public Welfare cut funding by over $100,000,000 for services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This very significant cut is drastically impacting the ability of service providers to continue offering quality supports and services to these very vulnerable individuals. The impact of these funding cuts will result in closure of programs, reduction of services and re-institutionalization of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

During your campaign you stated that, “meeting the human service needs of vulnerable Pennsylvanians is a core responsibility of state government”. Please remember this statement by taking the action necessary to restore these very, very important funds. These vulnerable individuals are depending on you.

Respectfully,
